Make it cheaper by any means necessary
Two or three years ago kyiv’s subway trains were equipped with video broadcasting system. Up to eight screens were installed in each wagon. These were 15” Samsung LCD matrices enclosed in tamper proof cases.
Judging by “kernel trap” screens this solution is based on FreeBSD.
Month ago started to advertise buying of 15” LCD Samsung monitors from population.
Seeing this advertisement for the first time I quickly understood how it was back then.
Technical specialist: We need $nnnnn to buy matrices n and $nnnnn to buy spare parts.
Pointy haired boss: Do you need those parts right now? No? Make it cheaper by any means necessary.
TS: But, but… what will we do when we need to replace broken screens?
PHB: We don’t have the enough budget this year.
…next year, 15” screens face “end of life” and begin to vanish from stores…
TS: If we not buy spare parts now we won’t get them later.
PHB: How much do you need?
TS: We need 50 to replace now and 250 to replace next year.
PHB: We have budget for 20. Do something with other 30. As for 250 — remind me next year.
